Our Place in the Global Conservation Strategy.
Harewood Bird Garden is an active member of BIAZA (British & Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums). Zoos and aquariums have become an integral part of the conservation movement. By raising awareness and essential funds for conservation, zoos are having significant positive effects on the future survival of many species and the conservation of their habitats.
From the Convention on Biological Diversity (1992) came the World Zoo Conservation Strategy (1993) which asks for strong support of conservation programmes from the zoo community, where such programmes are shown to be in the species' best interest. These zoo populations can directly support the survival of some species by providing the nuclei of re-establishment or reinforcement of wild populations in nature.
Captive Breeding Programmes are monitored by regional and often international Studbook Keepers and Register Keepers who work within Taxon Advisory Groups in order to maintain healthy populations. Many of the birds at Harewood are part of such programmes and these breeding programmes compliment the conservation of the species in their natural habitat.
