Chippendale supplied eighteen of these chairs, as well as two sofas and two window stools, for the State Bedroom and Dressing Room (now the Spanish Library). Six were intended for the bedroom. Edwin Lascelles supplied the damask, which Chippendale used for not only the seat furniture but also for the walls, curtains and bed hangings Although at £10 each they were the most expensive chairs Chippendale supplied for Harewood House, he also made a set for Sir Lawrence Dundas, which were twice as expensive.
The whole suite was re-covered in the 1850's with this Beauvais tapestry by a firm called George Trollope & Sons who were brought to spring and re-upholster all the furniture in the house. Six of the chairs for the State bedroom have recently been recovered in this green silk damask, with the aid of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
