Chair
c.1765
Nostell Priory (The National Trust)

From a suite of parlour chairs, the back of this piece corresponds exactly to a design in the third edition of the Director, shown here. Although it follows the most popular of all his chair patterns, without firm documentation it is difficult to make a confident attribution to Chippendale.

Nevertheless, it is an important piece because it provides clear evidence that Chippendale's Director was used as a guide for choosing and making furniture from.
