This chair was originally part of a set of eight, only three have survived, and is listed in the 1795 inventory, for the Entrance Hall, as '8 painted armed chairs covered with Needlework'. Although the beech frames have since been striped, varnished and adorned with small applied ornaments, they still retain their tapestry covers. They were invoiced on 24 June 1775 as '8 very neat Splat back Japannd Chairs Green and white with Cabriole Seats stuft and Covered with your needlework and finished with Brass nails'. This implies that Lascelles provided the tapestry, which was probably worked by his second wife Lady Fleming, and made up by Chippendale's men into seat covers.
Two matching 'large Circular Stools' were supplied two years later and although only one has survived it has been fully restored. The chairs would have been similarly painted.
