Invoiced as part of a set of six lyre-back chairs, supplied with slip seats covered in green haircloth, in January 1768, for Sir Rowland Winn at Nostell Priory. At £6 each these were relatively expensive pieces of furniture.
It is known that Chippendale made two sets of lyre-backed chairs in his lifetime, the second set was supplied to Lord Melbourne at Brocket Hall five years later, in 1773. Here Chippendale is moving away from the fanciful Rococo style and adopting a more Neo-classical approach. By 1773 he had perfected this style and the result is a much more elegant set of chairs.
