Hall Chair
c.1775
Nostell Priory (The National Trust)

Although no documentation survives for these eight hall chairs, they relate so closely to the ones supplied for the Entrance Hall at Harewood that they must be attributed to Chippendale. The backs are inlaid with the Winn crest of an eagle, which was a popular device for hall chairs as it informed the visitor of the status of their host. They were originally japanned, but in 1821 Thomas Ward gave them a four-coloured grained finish, which survives today.
