Library Chair
c.1773-4
The Chippendale Society

Originally part of a set of six and supplied to Sir Penistone Lamb for his library at Brocket Hall. This is perhaps the only house where Chippendale was allowed to completely furnish a library. Bookcases were usually considered to be an integral feature of the room and therefore designed by the architect and constructed by craftsmen under his direction. In this case Chippendale designed the bookcases.

These chairs, with a lyre-shaped back splat, are very similar to a set supplied to Sir Rowland Winn in 1768. This chair is a much more accomplished Neo-classical design and illustrates Chippendale's move away from the Rococo style.
