Unlike any other documented Chippendale furniture, this chair (part of a suite of seven chairs and four sofas) was designed by Robert Adam and made by Chippendale for Sir Lawrence Dundas' London home. A watercolour design for one of the sofas survives among the Adam drawings in Sir John Soane's museum. This is the only recorded instance of Chippendale working to Adam's design.
The suite was invoiced on 9 July 1765 and the chairs described as 'exceedingly Richly Carv'd in the Antick manner. At £20 each these were the most expensive chairs Chippendale supplied throughout his career and twice as much as the most costly chairs made for the State Bedroom at Harewood.
