Made for the Circular Dressing Room this set of six chairs was originally japanned blue and white and upholstered in blue damask. George Trollope and Sons, a firm of interior decorators, upholsterers and cabinet-makers, were commissioned in the 1850's to re-paint and re-upholster all the chairs in the house. As a consequence all the chairs have sprung seats, which makes them look much rounder than they would have in the eighteenth century. These chairs were included in this work.
The Circular Dressing Room was one of the interiors at Harewood swept away by Charles Barry's remodelling of the house. The only evidence of this room are these six chairs and a pier table, restored by the Chippendale Society, as well as Adam's design. Decorative links can be found between the chairs, pier table and drawing.
