Hall Chair
1773
The Earl & Countess of Harewood, & the Trustees of the Harewood House Trust

The 1795 inventory lists four of these six hall chairs in the sub-hall. In comparison to the chairs made for the main entrance hall, these are more functional pieces. They are very plainly designed with the only decoration, the Lascelles crest, found on the back splat. The sub-hall was probably used more frequently by the family and their guests after they had been outdoors, whereas the grander hall upstairs would have been used by guests and visitors when first entering the house. A grander impression, therefore, was required for the main entrance, whilst the sub-hall needed to be a less formal space.
