Chair
c.1780
The Earl & Countess of Harewood, & the Trustees of the Harewood House Trust

This suite of twelve chairs is quite unlike all of Chippendale's other chairs at Harewood and it is likely that they were supplied by Thomas Chippendale the Younger, after his father retired from the business. They are much more delicate pieces than seen anywhere else in the house, although the rail back design can be found in a set made for Normanton Hall. It is also uncertain whether they were supplied by father or son.

The 1795 inventory lists them in the Breakfast Room (now the East Bedroom) and describes them as '12 Satton Wood Chairs with washing covers'. The was an informal and elegant room on the principal floor for the family, in which to serve tea and meals as well as a gathering place to read, sew and listen to music.
