Chippendale supplied this set of eight chairs, en suite with a pair of sofas, for Sir Rowland Winn's salon at Nostell Priory. The decoration for the salon and drawing room appears to have been finished around 1775, but it seems that Sir Rowland was in no hurry to furnish either room. In a letter of July 1781, Chippendale's partner, William Haig, wrote urging Lady Winn to choose some silk for the drawing room 'which would enable us to finish the furniture we had so long in hand'. This letter must refer to the eight chairs and two sofas.
Their simple design conforms to one of the firm's standard designs and can be seen in some of the Harewood chairs, which are embellished with more lavish carved decoration.
