Stool
c.1777
The Chippendale Society

This D-shaped stool, designed to fit into the niches of the Entrance Hall, has been fully restored to its original green and white scheme. Invoiced as one of a pair on 9 June 1777, they are described as a '2 large Circular Stools the feet very neatly Japanned Green & White, stuff'd and Covered with your needlework and finished with Brass nails £3-18-0d'. The needlework cover was probably worked by Lascelles' second wife Lady Fleming and supplied to Chippendale's men to make up into suitable seat covers.
Eight matching 'very neat Splat back Japannd Chairs' were also supplied two years earlier for the Entrance Hall, but they have since been stripped, varnished and decorated with small applied ornaments. Only three of these have survived and they also retain their original needlework covers.
