Chair
c.1770
The Earl & Countess of Harewood, & the Trustees of the Harewood House Trust

This is the only surviving chair from a set of '10 Oval backed Satton Wood Chairs covered with Needle Work', listed in the 1795 inventory for the coffee room in the basement. This room was a comfortable and elegant, but informal space for the gentlemen to smoke and relax. The current tapestry upholstery is later and was sprung in the 1850's by George Trollope & Sons, a firm of interior decorators, upholsterers and cabinet-makers who were brought in to refurbish the house and it's contents.
