Chair
c.1771
The Earl & Countess of Harewood, & the Trustees of the Harewood House Trust

Part of a set of eight armchairs, the frames were originally blue and gold and upholstered in pea green damask. They were made for the Saloon, which is located directly opposite the main entrance. This room was dramatically altered by Charles Barry in the 1840's when he turned the two alcoves and the pier between the two windows into bookcases.

George Trollope & Sons, a firm of interior decorators, upholsterers and cabinet-makers, sprang the chairs in the 1850's who were brought in to refurbish the house and it's contents. This springing has recently been removed and the seats returned to their flat eighteenth century shape.
