Chair
1770-1
The Earl & Countess of Harewood, & the Trustees of the Harewood House Trust

The State dining room furniture does not appear in Chippendale's bill, but the fitting up of the room is mentioned in the Day Work Book. This was compiled by Lascelles steward, Samuel Popelwell, who recorded the hours and days Chippendale's workers spent erecting large pieces of furniture and generally fitting up the rooms. This indicates that Chippendale was certainly responsible for supplying furniture for this room.

The pattern for this suite of twenty chairs is very similar to the ones made for Newby, Brocket and Goldsborough. They all have the same fan shaped back, although ornamented slightly differently, and a curved top rail with identical foliate finials at either end. It seems that Chippendale repeated the same basic pattern, whilst altering, adding or removing decorative details to create unique sets for each of his clients. The set made for Harewood is his most ornate.
