Bergere
1775
The Earl & Countess of Harewood, & the Trustees of the Harewood House Trust

These two bergeres were made en suite to the ten cabriole chairs, without arms, and two sofas all supplied for the Yellow Damask Sitting Room. They were originally covered in yellow damask, supplied by Edwin Lascelles, and described in Chippendale's bill as 'richly Carved neatly Japann'd yellow and white'. They were recovered by George Trollope & Sons, 1851, in this Beauvais tapestry and incorporated into the Music room suite.

The furnishings for the Yellow Damask Sitting Room is fully described in Chippendale's bill. As well as the yellow and white painted chairs, silvered looking glasses and pier tables were also supplied for this room. Only two of the silvered sconces have survived with this rare finish in tact. It was one of the more sumptuous rooms in the house, with the design of the Axminster carpet repeated in the ceiling, but in the 1840's it was turned into a billiard room and many of the pieces were removed.
