Two Pier Tables
c.1771-2
The Earl & Countess of Harewood, & the Trustees of the Harewood House Trust

Although these two tables, with their tops in almost perfect condition, are not in Chippendale's bill or mentioned in the Steward's Day Work Book they can be attributed to Chippendale on stylistic grounds. The fan shape design found on the rosewood top is a typical Chippendale motif and can be seen repeated on many of his marquetry pieces throughout the house. Similarly the carved decoration along the frieze is typical of the quality of Chippendale's craftsmanship.

The tables are mentioned in the 1795 inventory and it seems were made for the Breakfast Room, now the East Bedroom, and the frames were originally gilded. The current green and white colour scheme was probably added in the 1930's for Princess Mary. The Breakfast Room appears to have been a fairly informal room used by the family for serving tea and meals, as well as a gathering place to read, sew and listen to music.
