Two pier Tables
c.1779
The Earl & Countess of Harewood, & the Trustees of the Harewood House Trust

Although it is uncertain whether Chippendale the Elder or Younger supplied these two tables, it is thought that they were made for the White Drawing Room. They are probably the pair listed in the 1795 inventory as '2 Pier Tables in burnished Gold with inlaid Marble Tops'. These are the only pair of tables with tops following this description.

It is not known precisely when Chippendale the Elder retired, but it was probably c.1776, so the furnishings after this date were probably the responsibility of his son. The reclining cherub was certainly more in keeping with Chippendale the Younger's repertoire, but as he was finishing off his father's commission it is not inconceivable that he strove to supply the remaining furnishings according to his father's style. This makes it difficult to ascertain exactly who was responsible for the remaining items.
