Bureau Dressing-Table
c.1770
The Victoria and Albert Museum

Made for one of the dressing rooms at Harewood, this piece incorporates a dressing drawer with mirror and compartments for cosmetic bottles and combs. The cupboards below include drawers on either side and a number of shelves in the middle. Instead of providing two pieces of furniture, this was designed to save space and could be used for either dressing or as a writing table.

The marquetry work on a satinwood and rosewood ground is very similar to a number of other pieces in the house, including the library writing table, although it is perhaps not as sumptuous as those pieces made for the grander principal rooms. It was probably made for one of the rooms on the second floor where the less important family and rooms were located.
