Made for Sir Rowland Winn's library at Nostell Priory, this is an illustration of Chippendale supplying plainer and functional pieces for his clients. In comparison to similar functional pieces supplied for Edwin Lascelles, for example the library writing table and steps, this piece is far less ostentatious and indicates the differing tastes of Chippendale's two wealthy clients.
It has a hinged top, originally covered in green velvet, which rises on an adjustable horse thus allowing the artist or draughtsman to work on their sketches and drawings. There are small cupboards either side of the kneehole, which conceal drawers and at one end along the frieze is a narrow drawer for storing papers flat.
