Secretaire
c.1773
The Earl & Countess of Harewood, & the Trustees of the Harewood House Trust

This secretaire is not recorded in Chippendale's bill, but is identical in almost every aspect to the secretaire invoiced for the State bedroom in 1773. Whilst this piece is decorated with a satinwood veneer inlaid with oval medallions, enclosing classical urns and heads and a reclining figure, the piece made for the State bedroom is constructed out of Oriental lacquer panels, supplied by Lascelles. The lacquered piece is not recorded in the 1795 inventory, but this marquetry piece is. It is thought, therefore, that Edwin Lascelles disliked the first piece and a second one was made accordingly.
