Bed Cornice
c.1769-71
The Chippendale Society

This is one of three bed cornices, which are the only remaining pieces of a bed made by Chippendale for one of the Lodging Rooms at Harewood. It's serpentine shape is constructed out of blocks of pine and covered in fabric decorated in red, blue, green, yellow and brown with a chinoiserie pattern of foliage, flowers, bees, butterflies, prunus sprays, perching and flying birds. Very few bed cornices covered with printed fabric survive. Two from Paxton House are also displayed in the exhibition, but they have painted decoration
