These two fire-screens were supplied for the Saloon at Harewood House and were both originally finished in blue and gold. Although they are not recorded in the surviving portion of Chippendale's bill, they are listed in the 1795 inventory as '2 Fire Screens with Blue & Gold stands'. Only one has been restored to it's original scheme, whilst the other still retains it's later gilt finish, probably applied by the firm George Trollope & Sons in 1851. A comparison of the two shows how the beautifully carved decorative work was originally picked out and enhanced by the gold.
Both fire-screens have later poles and screen frames and the restored piece displays a tapestry panel identical to the one on a fire screen supplied for Dumfries House in 1759.
