Bird Garden

Harewood Bird Garden is one of England's most important avian collections, with over 90 species of birds housed in sympathetic surroundings. Over a third of the birds are classed as near threatened, vulnerable, endangered & critically threatened in the wild in the IUCN listings. The remaining two thirds are classed as lower concern in the wild, which still means there is concern over their future safety, or even that there is very little known about their numbers or status in the wild.

There is a wide variety of birds to see at Harewood from Java Sparrows to Ostrich, Penguins, Flamingos, Macaws and Red Kites. Visitors can wander through gardens past aviaries and enclosures which are home to birds from Africa, the Americas, Australasia and Indo-China. Read the labels that give fun facts about the birds and tell you about where they came from, their habitat, diet and behaviour.

The sloping site offers magnificent views across the lake and visitors are able to view the many species of waterfowl that naturally congregate on the water as well as the many Red Kites flying above.

Our links with several  conservation groups, such as the World Own Trust, Yorkshire Swan Rescue Centre, West Yorkshire Bat Group, World Pheasant Association, Yorkshire Red Kites, World Parrot Trust, Harrogate & Ripon Beekeepers' Association, Centre for the Humbolt Penguin, BIAZA and EAZA, mean we are also involved with several conservation projects and strategies around the world as well as in the UK.

Penguin Feeding

Would you like to help the Bird Garden Keepers to feed the Penguins?
Penguin Feeding takes place daily at 2pm, costs just £10 and can be booked through the Harewood Information Centre on 0113 218 1000. Please note: Penguin feeding only available during our open season (March to November).

Red Kites at Harewood

Red Kites were released on the Harewood Estate in 1999 as part of a UK conservation initiative. Check out our Red Kites page for further information. Bird Garden Rangers are available throughout the season to talk about and look out for these incredibly striking birds.
