Openminds

The Original Openminds Project
The original Openminds project ran between 2000 –2003 and was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). It enabled secondary school pupils for deprived inner city areas to participate in one-day, expert-led workshops. Subjects covered included:

The Science of Art
• Painting, Pigments and Science (KS2) – how an understanding of chemistry can increase a understanding of how paintings are made.
• Even the Great Masters Cheated! (A Level) – how science helped create great works of art.
• Mini-beasts and Flights of Fancy (KS2) – based on the Victorian ideas of collecting science and art.

English and Literacy
• From Text to Life (GCSE / A Level) – improving student’s understanding of set texts through creative and personal response.
• Cross-cultural connections (KS3 / 4) – exploring cross cultural links through the art of an English country house.
• Magical Myth Making (KS2) – exploring the stories behind the statues, objects and paintings at Harewood.
• Sculpting a Literary Response (KS3 / 4) – exploring sculpture through creative writing.

Dance
• Phoenix Dance (KS3 / 4) – visited Harewood to gain inspiration for movement workshops.

Music
• Explorations in Music (KS2 / 3 / 4) – students compose their own arrangements in response to Harewood’s history, landscape and collections.

Art
• Stubbs / Wallinger (GCSE / A Level) – considering the relationship between 18th and 20th century art.
• Flamboyant Fashions in Miniature (KS2 / 3) – design and make a paper fasion accessory based on the Harewood portraits.

We are continuing this learning format with workshops connected to our current exhibitions. Contact us for more details.
