Jacob Epstein 'Isabel - the First Portrait, 1932' This season the ante room houses our Epstein & Isabel:Artist & Muse display.

When Isabel Rawsthorne died in 1992, she left behind her the story of a woman who had lived with, loved and been portrayed by some of the greatest artists of the 20th century including Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, André Derain, Alberto Giacometti and Jacob Epstein.

Born Isabel Nicholas in 1912, she was later married to Sefton Delmer, then Constant Lambert and finally Alan Rawsthorne. She was a painter in her own right and designed sets and costumes for The Sadlers Wells Ballet Company. To simply call her a muse would be to underestimate the importance of her role in the history of the arts.

This small display focuses on one sculpture from the current Earl and Countess of Harewood’s private collection, Epstein’s Isabel – the First Portrait. Made by Jacob Epstein in 1932 when Isabel was just 20 years old, the sculpture, which has never before been shown in public, is complemented by two of Isabel’s own paintings which have been kindly lent by the custodian of her collection.
